Remember when DJ Khaled used to put out albums that were incredibly commercialized and riding on one-single wonders? Well, it was refreshing to see Khaled’s latest LP Major Key provide more than just commercial tracks. It had substance, albeit a hit-and-miss second half. Still, it was his most complete album.
On Monday, Khaled rolled out a new single, “To the Max” featuring Drake and his next album’s title, GRATEFUL.
This beat is filled with quick drums that give it a sort-of Caribbean vibe, which is something that hip-hop artists, especially Drake and Wale, have used on their latest works.
The beat is … fine, but there’s hardly anything to admire about the song itself. Sometimes, songs fit better in context with the rest of an album, but “To the Max” feels very middle of the road. It ain’t terrible, but it’s forgettable.
GRATEFUL releases June 23, 2017.
